London Wool
We are thrilled to be part of a collaboration with London City Farms to create ethically produced wool and products that would otherwise go to waste. This pilot project unites 10 London farms, combining their wool for commercial processing.
From City Farms to Cozy Knits
Each year, more than half a million Londoners visit a city farm, where sheep are kept as part of educational programmes. While shearing is essential for the sheep's wellbeing, the amount of wool from each farm is too small to process commercially. This project aims to change that by combining wool from 596 sheep across 10 farms, resulting in a sizable amount for commercial processing.
The Journey of Our Wool
From the fields of London to the mills of Yorkshire, every step is handled with care:
- Shearing & Collection: Sheep are sheared each spring, and the fleece is collected from across 10 farms.
- Grading: The collected fleece is graded by the WB in Ashford, Kent, ensuring quality.
- Scouring & Carding: In Yorkshire, the wool is scoured to clean it and then carded to align the fibres.
- Spinning: The wool is spun into fine threads and twisted into ply for strength.
- The Product: The London City Farm Yarn is ready to be sold as hanks for knitters or cones for designers, as well as original products like blankets, socks, gloves, garments, and hats.
