Surrey Docks City Farm – A Working Farm in London, SE16

Surrey Docks Farm is a working city farm and charity that enables the whole community to learn about farming, food production and the natural environment. Running a range of educational projects targeted to engage those who would benefit most and are supported by hundreds of dedicated volunteers who attend on a weekly basis. The earliest known major development on this land was a shipyard, where wooden sailing ships were constructed throughout the 1700s and beyond. When the shipyard was broken up, the site that we know today as the Farm was formed. It first served as a timber wharf, and then a smallpox receiving station for the River Ambulance Service. 1939, the wharf became a full-time river fire station in WWII. Surrey Docks Farm moved to the site in 1986 where 11 years earlier it had been situated downriver at Greenland Dock.
