PETA Animal Rights

Animal welfare should be one of the most important issues in any sustainable fashion business. PETA (people for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) serve to highlight mistreatment of all animals world wide.

Over the last few years they have exposed the terrible treatment of rabbits in the production of angora yarn, goats in the production of Mohair and Cashmere, and sheep in the production of Australian Merino wool.

The price point of fast fashion has encouraged unethical, intensive farming practices, which is why PETA banned the use of angora. The speed required to shear and maintain flocks is the main factor causing harm and distress to the cashmere goats and Merino sheep. In Mongolia, the herds of cashmere goats have become so large they now cause erosion to the pastures, threatening the existence of future generations of farmers.

We need to consider sustainable solutions which do not involve animal suffering or environmental damage.
